Why We Like Jovic in Bad Homburg
Jovic has been making a habit of competing strongly against elite opposition, and that is the biggest reason we make her a much stronger favourite than the odds imply.
The 18-year-old has looked increasingly comfortable at top-level WTA events and her grass-court form has been especially encouraging. In her penultimate match she produced an excellent win over Amanda Anisimova, currently ranked No. 6 in the world, on grass at Queen’s. That result was another reminder that Jovic is already operating at a level well above that of a typical player ranked in the mid-to-late teens.
More importantly from a betting perspective, Jovic’s level against top opposition has become consistently competitive rather than occasional. She is not just picking up wins against lower-ranked players and protecting ranking points; she is already proving she can hold her own, and win, against some of the strongest players on tour.
That makes this matchup against Wang look very attractive.
Wang’s Results Against Stronger Opposition Are a Concern
While Jovic has been building a profile of high-level wins and competitive performances, Wang’s recent results against stronger players point in the opposite direction.
Wang has lost all three of her recent matches against top-50 opposition in straight sets, and that is a major concern heading into a meeting with an in-form Jovic on grass. Those results suggest that when the overall pace, consistency and weight of shot rise, Wang has struggled to stay with that level.
That matters here because Jovic is bringing exactly that sort of pressure into this contest.
This is not simply a case of backing the higher-ranked player. It is a case of backing the player whose recent performances suggest she is capable of operating at a much higher standard than her opponent, particularly on this surface.
Grass Looks Another Positive for Jovic
Surface also adds to the case for the American.
Jovic’s game translates well to grass, where her aggressive intent and ability to take time away from opponents become even more effective. She has already shown on this swing that she can produce top-level tennis on the surface, and her confidence should be high after a strong run in the UK.
Wang, by contrast, comes into the match with far less convincing recent evidence that she can match that level against a player of Jovic’s current standard.
If Jovic serves well and gets on top early in rallies, this has the look of a match she can control from the baseline.
Betting Value: Why the Odds Look Too Big
This is where the bet becomes most appealing.
The market has Jovic available at 1.80+, but we would make her notably shorter than that. Our tissue price for the American is around 1.60, which leaves a healthy margin between our assessment and the current market price.
